The Wilksch WAM-120 engine is, for many, one of the most promising compression-ignition engines. We get hands-on with the first installation in the U.S.

 

For those not familiar with the WAM engine, it is a direct-drive, two-stroke, liquid-cooled, forced-induction diesel engine. Three inline cylinders reside beneath the high-mounted crankshaft; the propeller thrust line is close to where it is with the Lycoming despite the lack of a gearbox.
